Development Educator with Lourdes Youth and Community Services

Helena McNeill is a Development Educator with Lourdes Youth and Community Services, a Dublin Inner City Community Development Project, since 1998. She is Convener of the IDEA Community Sector Working Group. Helena facilitates adults in the local community to make the connections between their lived experience and wider global issues. She also works extensively with community educators, workers and activists, building their capacity to bring this global dimension to their work, and is the author of a handbook for facilitators called Connecting Communities: A Practical Guide to Using Development Education in Community Settings. Johnny Sheehan is the chairperson of IDEA. He has 25 years national and international experience working in development education and in the wider community and voluntary sector. He is currently Membership and Regional Manager at The Wheel and has extensive experience on charity boards, having previously served as chairperson of Comhlámh. He holds a certificate in Charity Law, Trusteeship and Governance from the Law Society.

Prof. Eoin Devereux


Assistant Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Limerick 


Professor Eoin Devereux is Assistant Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Limerick. He is also Adjunct Professor in Contemporary Culture at the University of Jyvasklya, Finland. Eoin has published extensively on the media's role in shaping public beliefs concerning migration. He is the co-editor (with Amanda Haynes, Martin J. Power, Aileen Dillane and James Carr) of the recently published Public and Political Discourses of Migration: International Perspectives (2016) published by Rowman and Littlefield International (2016).

Deo Ladislas Ndakengerwa

Human Rights and Anti-racism Activist 


Deo Ladislas Ndakengerwa is a human rights and anti-racism activist who has been living in Ireland since 2000. He has served on the executive board for many migrant organisations including Integrating Ireland, Integrate Ireland Language Training, the African Refugee Network, Sligo Intercultural Forum (Founder) and RBcom. Deo was chairperson of the Irish Refugee Council and instrumental to its strategic reform in 2007. He has also worked as Policy and Campaigns Officer for the Irish Refugee Council, as Coordinator for European Peace Project, Co. Sligo, Cultural Mediator for Access Ireland, Research Assistant in the Social Center in UCD, and Health and Integration Officer at SPIRASI.

Salome Mbugua



Vice-Chair European Network of Migrant Women, and Head of Mission at Wezesha


Native of Kenya, Salome Mbugua has lived in Ireland since 1994. She is the founder and former CEO of AkiDwA - The Migrant Women’s Network in Ireland, and she was appointed as honorary president of the organisation in 2014. She is the co-founder and head of Mission of Wezesha - an African Diaspora led development organisation in Ireland working with African women and children that are affected or are likely to be affected by violence, war, conflict and poverty. Salome is currently vice-chair of the European Network for Migrant Women.

Mbemba Jabbi



Founder and Managing Director of Jabbi Group Limited


Mbemba Jabbi is a founder and Managing Director of Jabbi Group Limited, a trade and consultancy company based in Ireland. He has been carrying out research on African Diaspora and their role in the development of Africa countries, evaluating programme activities of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and facilitating dialogue between the private sector and non-profit sector in Ireland on how they can work together in eradicating global poverty. Mbemba is the chairperson of Gambia Association Ireland and Link Africa 365 Limited, a trade and development company by African Diasporas in Ireland, which promotes trade and international development between Ireland and African countries. Mbemba was also a Director of the Africa Centre Ireland, an African led charity from 2012 to 2015.

The Conversation Café


We have four tables focused on exploring the issues relating to migration that have been discussed in the Panel Session in more depth. These will be hosted by experts in this area from across Irish civil society and co-facilitated by representatives from the Development Education community.

Participants are invited to start at one table for an in-depth 45minute conversation, and then visit another table for 10 minutes for a mini-conversation building on what was discussed before you joined.
