Conversation Circle: We need to talk about Palestine

Start Date: 19/02/2020 End Date: 19/02/2020

Event Location: IDEA Office, 6 Gardiner Row, Dublin 1

Our first Conversation Circle of 2020, 'We need to talk about Palestine', will take place Wednesday, 19 February, 12.30 – 2.00pm in the IDEA Office. This will focus on two perspectives from the region: Fatin Al Tamimi, the chairperson of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign ; and Patricia Owens, who recently returned from three months with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI).

Fatin is a Palestinian/Irish citizen, living in Ireland since 1988. Although she grew up outside of her native country, she carries Palestine with her, and dreams of going back to live in her native city of Al-Khalil (Hebron). Her main goal is to raise awareness and work on ending oppression, inhumanity and injustice in the world and strive for peace in Palestine. Fatin believes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) movement, is one of the most effective ways to promote Palestinian rights and achieve justice.

Patricia has worked in the area of education for a number of years.  In March 2017, Patricia visited Israel and Palestine and the trip motivated her to do a Masters in International Security and Conflict. In August 2019 Patricia volunteered in Yanoun, a small rural village in the North of the West Bank for three months with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). As an EAPPI volunteer, she provided a protective presence and monitored human rights abuses.

Registration will take place from 12.30pm and participants can help themselves to a light lunch before the conversation starts at 12.45pm.

IDEA is looking for a video production company/ animator for an upcoming video project. We have funding available to create a short animated educational video resource for members as part of The Code of Good Practice. The video will help viewers understand what quality GCE is and why it matters in the world today. The intended audience for the video are people who are connected to the Code of Good Practice and GCE in their work but not yet very familiar with it e.g. non-GCE staff in member organisations, board members of member organisations, teachers, youth workers, European partners, new members to the Code and new staff to IDEA member organisations. Please submit your CV and a short letter of interest outlining a proposal for the video (including the number of days you envisage and the fee) to code@ideaonline.ie. The deadline for application is Wednesday, 30 July 05pm. Click here for the full terms of reference.

In June, a delegation from our Erasmus+ partner organisation LAPAS (Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation) visited Dublin for a two-day learning and exchange visit hosted by IDEA. The visit was part of an ongoing collaboration with LAPAS to strengthen quality global citizenship education (GCE) in Ireland and Latvia, using the IDEA Code of Good Practice as a framework. You can find out more about the Erasmus+ project here.
